ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sophie Kate Foster is a multi-disciplinary Fine Artist and Veterinary Technologist, born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. She graduated from Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design in Auckland, with a BFA in 2017. In 2022, Sophie graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology with a specific interest in wildlife conservation in New Zealand. She has volunteered at Wildbase Recovery Centre in Palmerston North and done practical experience in the Wildbase Hospital working with native birds and reptiles.

Her art practice primarily consists of painting, collage, installation and photography. Sophie is working as a bicultural artist with Pakeha and Māori (Ngāpuhi) lineage. She was raised with very little knowledge of her Māori heritage, which inspired her current exploration into ‘post-colonial identity’ in Aotearoa. She incorporates a combination of Māori taonga and Pakeha traditions, and addresses ecological ideas within her practice. Growing up Sophie took interest in the rural setting, spending a lot of time outdoors exploring the native flora and fauna. Ever since the age of four, the natural world has embodied the subject of her artistic reflection and has not ceased throughout her professional practice.
